We mastered times tables in fourth grade. I remember being the best, feeling that spark of thrill when I got the answer right but no one else did. Back then I never understood the how of the questions; how you got from one number to next. Only that you did. It seemed to me that two numbers produced a third with no rhyme or reason. I understood later, but there are still many things to which I cannot provide a rhyme or reason.
