We sat in the entry of the portal for a long time. We were not really sure what to do. What would happen if one of us entered it and went through? Where would we end up? Were are arms just in another dimension or was there even another dimension?
Zack stumbled upon the wormhole while he was hiking the other day. It seems to move every other week. He showed it to me the second time he found it. Now it has become somewhat of a game for us. Go hiking, find the large, round, glowing blue hole in the universe. We finally decided to take a shot and try to see where it lead today when we found it.
For some reason that idea was a lot easier said that done. Now that we are here, neither of us have the balls to go first. What would happen to our families if we couldn't come back through? So here we sat.
It seemed to swirl on the inside, but we couldn't see much of anything else. It was unfortunate because we could really use a new adventure.
I had know Zack since elementary school. I think that we have been in love since then too. Zack was the outdoorsy type. Always dragging me on camping trips and out to the lake, and now to this mountain. Any. Chance. He. Could. Get. I wouldn't mind so much if I were actually into the outdoors. Not that I didn't like them, but really...I am not that kind of guy.
Zack hugged me and then held my hands in his. "I think we should go together," he said.
I shook with anticipation and nervousness of the unknown that laid behind the veil. "What if we can't get back through?"
"Well, then at least we will have each other. That is all I need in my life. It's not like my good-for-nothing alcoholic father will miss me. And honesty, Matt, the rest of my family hates me for being with you. Maybe whoever lives on the other end of this thing likes cute gay couples."
I paused for a minute. He had a point. He really didn't have anyone but me in his corner out in this world. My family, on the other hand, loved both of us. Zack was just hesitant to let anyone in.
"Come on," Zack urged with that big grin of his that I loved so much. He knew I couldn't resist him.
I nodded and he kissed me on the lips before grabbing my hand. We both looked forward and then at each other. We nodded, closed our eyes and stepped forward into our new world.
The scarf covering her head was good to keep the wind out, but it did little to camouflage her in the moving sand. She was waiting there with her partner to see if the Mexican drug lords would show up to their meeting spot. They sat quietly, hidden to the eye of their enemies. As they looked through their binoculars, they could see the dust being forced up and then falling back down as a truck approached the meeting spot.
"We have to go," she said. "They will see us if we don't."
The two moved back and snuck out of sight from anyone who could stumble upon them. She took her place behind her sniper rifle as he receded to their dirt bikes to radio in back up. The plan worked. Their country now safer with fewer threats of drugs and dangerous drug money entering their territory. Mexican authorities showed up as was planned to issue an arrest to anyone who was not left dead.
The smoke of the incense filled the air. The smell in the air in combination with the smoke made her cough, and even worse, made her remember. Her mother always burned the same sticks over and over. Every day and night. With every night came her violence and every night was relived when she smelled that damn burning. He husband had recently started to bring home incense and that is when she knew she had to leave him.
She fled her home that was once a comforting place. She now breathed the cold air of the winter while sitting at a bus stop that was her starting point to no where in particular.
