i remember youth like it was yesterday,

but only in young age,
when we were fixed on simpler prizes.
A pageant is a competition (usually for women) where people of a certain age dress their finest to impress a panel of judges. Personally I feel this is one of the easiest competitions you can be involved in, as you only have to work on your appearance and strut.
