They called that child a demon because of his eyes. Eyes that could swallow the soul, they said. Eyes that were unnatural, so horribly wrong in a child's face. They were eyes that lacked life, vibrancy, a spark, a twinkle. There was nothing in them. They were eyes that were deep, dark pools that seemed to swallow the light in whoever dared meet them, and left a person haunted.... Those were eyes that had seen death and horrible truths and tremendous losses. Those eyes... those eyes were soulless.
Laughter thundered throughout the big top as the clowns in the center made such fools of themselves. They seemed to have no shame in the embarrassing, self-depreciating gags. All for the sake of getting the uproar from the crowd.
The little girl didn't understand. What she saw were people suffering humiliation. Why was everyone laughing...?
