She opened the door and realised straight away that she'd been misled. She could almost hear him laughing, knowing he had won again. She wondered how she could be tricked so easily after all these years. There was nothing else to do now. She could hardly pretend she wasn't there. She walked over to the bed that looked more like a prison with its raised bars on each side. She looked down at the skeletal creature lying there, her eyes strangely large staring up at her.
"Hello Mum," she said, "it's been a long time."
She walked without making a sound. Her grey fur shining in the moonlight. The rooftops were her territory and she guarded them fiercely. Nobody could come close to her here. She was finally safe and in control.
