The sun that usually beat down upon the ground was gone, hidden behind dark storm clouds that covered the sky. Thunder rolled and lightning struck -- with it came the rain. I sighed happily, turning my face up to the sky and letting the rain nourish me and the desert I lived in.
It was shiny, tantalizingly red. She held it in her hand, rubbing the pads of her fingers across the skin. She thought for a moment, meeting the eyes of her lover, before biting into the apple.
I stood at the edge of an oasis, the puddle in front of me the salvation I had been waiting for in the arid desert. I fell to my knees, cupped my hands and reached for the water.
My hands came back empty.
