"Answer me. Did you?"
She was good at this. Or at least, she used to be. Bullshitting was in her blood, either from her mother's side or her father's, depending on who you believed.
"No. I never loved him," she replied.
"Happy Valentine's Day," he said. He took one from the box and lifted it to her lips.
She smiled at him, the kind of smile that made him want to kiss her. He hoped she didn't swallow the ring, like last time.
It was under her skin, in her blood. There were no more barriers. He looked at her. His eyes were glassy. Soon, they closed. They would never be apart.
The troops were amassed. Teddy bears, Barbie dolls, Cabbage Patch kids; even her little brother's toy trucks and action figures- all of them had gathered for the war. The closet opened. A dark shadow crept forward. It was time to face the creature once and for all.
"You're a coward," she said. Her wimple blew softly in the wind. Then, before he could speak, she jumped. The rest of the congregation- mothers, fathers, children, they followed soon after.
