The last taboo is money. Families won't even talk about it.
Parents and children don't even discuss money. And we really should.
Because money is a means to an end. Not an end in itself. Start talking folks.
Out here in the suburbs, I have my celestial moments, coming home from
teaching at night with only the streetlights and a yellow-lit window, I can see a
smattering of stars, maybe planets. I stand still and look up, the vast dark sky
casts a blanket over me with its twinkling sparks.
My sister used to weave on a loom.
She carried around the loom on the college campus.
It made her into an artisan and I was proud of her.
I can't remember exactly what she wove on is.
Every person comes with her own stories, even if she herself cannot see this.
All efforts at communication are an attempt to delve deeper into the stories of others
for by listening and understanding, we learn about ourselves.
In this life you've got to be determined in everything you want to do
if you want to accomplish your goals.
It's all about how things are presented--
gifts, people, flowers, attitudes.
It's the pomp and circumstance,
It's the flourish. So remember,
present things properly.
We spend our lives searching for
methods. How to live, how to love,
how to accumulate money, how to
make decisions. How to start, how to stop.
Sometimes we follow the methods of other
people who seem to have the answers.
There is method to our madness (Shakespeare).
Why the need to broadcast personal information?
Keep it to yourself. No one cares.
But we are obsessed with telling all.
Information overload.
One day it will tumble on us and collapse us in a heap--
all our terrible secrets, large and small.
We used to go up on the roof
when it was hot in the city and
we'd talk and talk about how
one day our life would take us
far away from this roof and all
the other rooftops growing up
in the Queens air.
Nothing is simple
until you break it down
into small parts.
It is easier to deal
with the small ions
of life before tackling
massive mountains.
Maybe life is simple--
we require air, food, water
and love to give and receive.
Simple, no?
