I learned a lot in marching band. Not just how to walk and play at the same time without smashing my teeth in; I learned how to take responsibility, I learned most of my self-confidence, and I learned how to want something so passionately that to suffer for it is a beautiful thing.
I was in band for nine years. It was hard at first, I chose the French horn thinking if I could play it, I could play anything. I couldn't play it. At least, not for the first few years. Middle school is an awkward time for anybody, and it's an especially awkward time when you throw learning a new instrument on top of learning a new body. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
