Marjorie sighed, leaning back in her seat with an unceremonious flop as the world around her began to fade into view once more. She'd been poring over the same pages for hours now, confined to her own little section of the library without a distraction in sight. She almost swore she could make out the silhouette of a librarian off in the distance, but it was of little consequence to her. For some reason, the old crone never thought much of Marjorie despite her down-to-earth, almost studious nature, and she thought even less of Marjorie's decidedly un-studious boyfriend, Theodore.

The grass always seemed greener... the fruit sweeter, somehow. He relished the opportunity to explore the almost foreign landscape, knowing full well it was a privilege only granted to select citizens.
I wasn't prepared for the way things had went that night as I sat on the edge of my porch, coated in mud and doused in sweat from what'd happened earlier. What HAD happened, anyway? What had I done? I couldn't remember, no matter how hard I tried. All I knew was the sinking feeling that'd crept up inside of me was growing, and there was nothing I could do to stop it.
The older man sat upright, squinting at the light of the incoming day as the sun shone out across the horizon. He hadn't been there for very long now, perhaps the better part of four hours, but somehow the landscape shifted when the sun began to rise. Gone were the shadowy figures of the sparse bits of foliage across the way... gone were the slithery serpents that hissed and oftentimes flicked their feathery-forked tongues at his feet...
Gone was the very essence of what made (town name here) (town name here) at the slightest peek of sunlight, and perhaps it was that notion that shocked the old man the most.
