I wonder who created the first punishment and how he (or she) did it. Did they watch someone do something they didn't approve of and decided that they would hurt this fellow and call it a punishment?
"Bagel?"
She turns, startled.
"Excuse me?"
"Would you like a bagel?"
She frowns at the stranger. "I don't even know you."
He shrugs but he's smiling and it's a nice smile. Bright and friendly.
"You don't me now," he says. "But maybe, if you let me get you a bagel, you could."
Beware she says as she wraps a scarf around the young woman. Be afraid not of the skyscrapers and the cars. Be afraid not of the loud sounds and bright lights - no. Beware of the people around you. Beware of their words and their actions because not everyone will have your best interests in mind. But most of all, beware of those who will make a place for themselves in your hearts, only to walk out, leaving an empty gaping hole in your heart. For those are the people who will push you to the brink of insanity and ruin you.
He knew this day would come. He knew. But it didn't make it hurt any less now that it was actually happening. She was getting married to someone who wasn't him. And it hurt.
