The ant walked up the hill, feeling infinitely inferior, as usual. He sighed and forced himself to keep going, trying to ignore the heavy load on his back. Why should the queen get to sit around doing nothing anyway? Sam wished he could gather the courage to lead a revolution, something, anything, that would change the order of things. Just once he wanted things to work out his way. Just once.
"Alex, there are spikes on his jacket," Alexander Pettigrew pointed out.
Jane sighed and kept working. "Yes?"
"This does not worry you? Not even the slightest bit?" Alexander Pettigrew asked, fidgeting a bit.
She stood up and looked him in the eye. "I have spikes on my shoes," she pointed out.
She sighed and began writing. "Today I was walking along the railroad. It reminded me of that movie I saw a long time ago, about the four boys who go and try and find a dead body or something like that. Anyway, they are following a railroad, and a train comes, so they all jump out of the way. You know, like most people would."
"And I am liiiiiiving in a material world"
"Stef, get down from there."
"Cuz I am a material girl!"
"Stef."
She grinned and stumbled towards me. "Yeeees?"
"Stef, let's go home."
"Why do you keep repeating my name?"
"Are you certain you are allowed to do that?"
She stopped rifling through the papers and glared at him. "I don't exactly have much of a choice, do I?" She turned around and went back to looking for what she needed. His frown grew and he shifted uncomfortably and hoped she would be down soon.
"I dunno, it's not showing up on my radar."
"...excuse me?"
"I said, it's not--"
"What did I do to get stuck with you? I work my butt off for two years, and I end up paired with some kid who has no clue what he's doing. Of course."
"Look, I'm sorry that--"
"Please, just be quiet. And try not to mess things up further."
"Here you go!" the salesperson said with a large smile on her face. I smiled slightly and took the kit from her outstretched hands. "Hope you have a super day!" she called out as I left the store. I swallowed and tried to remind myself to breathe and not let my nervousness ruin everything as it had a tendency to do.
"Have you tried my latest elixir yet?" he asked, holding out a curvy purple bottle.
"I've told you a hundred times, Eli. I don't want to buy any of your 'elixirs.' All I need is a couple specific things every once in a while, but no elixirs."
"How about a free sample?"
"All the world is a stage," the teacher announced to the class. "Who's heard this quote before?"
Everyone silently stared back at the teacher. No one could be bothered to raise their hand,
"All of you, great," the teacher continued. She had been a teacher for two years now, and she knew that just because no one raised their hand didn't mean no one knew the answer or no one had anything to say.
"I hate this stupid den. I want to go home," she mumbled dejectedly as she halfheartedly tried to start a fire. She thought about all the things she missed, but quickly stopped because she could feel tears start to flow down her face.
