She looked at the zeros in her bank account, dollars upon dollars cascading far beyond what she could ever use in a lifetime. She wondered if it was worth it.
"Eeeek". She jumped out of her regular stride to avoid the frail pink creature on the sidewalk. She stared at its tiny bones, barely concealed by translucent skin. Its unopened eyes tightly clamped against the brutal world that it would succumb to shortly.
The broken trunk jutted out of the ground like a bone piercing skin.
She used her thumb and index finger to zoom the camera on her iphone screen, bringing the purple daisy petals into focus, ensuring the frame captured the dirt, moss and artfully fallen tree limb in the periphery. Daisies had always been her favourite.
I deserve this. I do. I've worked hard. I've gone to the gym 3 times this week. Well, two times and a walk. I've eaten nothing but salads and veggies and lean protein. Except that time it was James' birthday. And Jenn's bachelorette. She surveyed the crispy golden brown delicacy in front of her. Self -sabotage, her therapist's new favourite phrase wafted through her mind, as did the scent of the still-hot fryer oil oozing onto the plate in front of her.
We brought our find back to camp. Gail took one look at it and outright refused. "It's a dog!", she choked. "We have no choice.", was my reply.
The leaves sprung up through the cracks in the cement, determined to reach the sun....
Hunkering down in the rickety fold out seat, I let my eyes adjust to the inky blackness enveloping me in the 50's style cinema. Black and white spots dance on the screen, and my stomach does cartwheels. I'll be on screen in 5...4...3...2...1.
Disney's classics. He loved them. Along with the colour purple, his car, and his ex. It was the last one that held her back.
His whiskers twitched.
He knew I was lying.
"Really, I'm fine!" I insisted.
"God, what is wrong with me. I'm talking to my cat."
