He turned the steak over so the other side could cook.
"When's it doing to be done, Daddy?"
He smiled down at his little daughter. "Soon, sweetheart. Very soon."
She knew it was just wishful thinking. How could someone like him ever notice someone like her? Yet when she was alone, she couldn't help daydreaming about the two of them walking on the beach at sunset, hand in hand.
He loved being outdoors. He loved to go hiking with his wife and daughter in the nearby mountains. It was so peaceful there, away from civilization.
The rock came at me so fast I almost didn't dodge in time. I hit the ground and rolled over, covering my head. Another rock hit the ground next to me.
I hoped my instincts hadn't misled me as I tiptoed through the dark corridor. He was here somewhere, I was sure of it.
I danced along the rooftops, sprinkling fairy dust everywhere. Nightmares turned to pleasant dreams, and those who'd been lying awake now slept soundly.
I shoved the disposable items in the fridge and slammed the door. Why did I have to do all the work?
Slow and steady. Don't look down. That's what they told me. I make my way to the end of the tightrope and heave a sigh of relief.
I stared at her for what felt like forever. All I could say was, "You're gorgeous."
I couldn't sleep that night. I kept tossing and turning, thinking about what he'd said to me earlier that day. What had he meant? Was there another girl, or was something else going on?
