She slowly sank to the floor. It wasn't that she hated them. In fact, it wrenched her heart out every time she had to see them go. She had shouted at them to go away, to leave her alone. It wasn't because she didn't love them, didn't want to spend time with them. But if they looked at her closely enough they might see. It she allowed herself to let her guard down she might say something too revealing.
It was never her intention to hurt them, but she knew that, no matter how bad it got, she couldn't let them know. She couldn't let them see how damaged she really was inside.
She loved her parents. Really, she did. But she just couldn't bear the thought of that disappointment in their eyes when they found out the truth. So she kept it from them.
If she had to push them away, so be it.
The child scurried to his place in his bedroom closet, like he always did when they started this way. He listened to the loud voices as they carried down the hall. He knew that he shouldn't feel guilty, that this couldn't have anything to do with him. But when his mother had sat him down at the table that morning, and told him to make a decision. Told him to choose between the two most important people in his life. He just couldn't do it. How could anyone make choice like that. It wasn't his fault that they were always fighting. He was just caught in the crossfire. And now he was expected to enter the fray, to become exactly what he had always feared. The reason for the madness.
There was nothing out there in the snow. It was all completely silent. Jenny could feel it itching in her bones; the urge to disturb the peace.
With an evil glint in her eye, she bounded to the closet to don her winter clothes. As she was in a bit of a hurry, she got her buttons mixed up on her coat, and didn't bother to fix them. Once she was ready she bolted out the door. The Christmas wreath hanging on the other side swished as the door settled back into place after being carelessly slammed behind the child.
