In time
he came
to prefer
you.
Slow inhale next to sharp. Subtle appreciation alongside loud exhalation. A shared preference, yet the expressions couldn't be more different.
Holding you in my arms, holding me tight. Willing captives, as it was. Breathe one last before all is done.
His eyes screamed, begging for mercy when his mouth could not. Turned away, no one left to meet his gaze.
Reaching, grasping, holding -
Grip slips. You fall.
Away they turn, away they go.
Gone, gone, gone.
You've stopped, waiting, tearful
alone
Slowly, slowly, slowly
stepping through the forest.
Dim light light surrounds,
fading away with the fall of the star.
Your turn has come up. You inhale sharply at the call of your name, knowing what lies ahead - and yet, not knowing at all. Aboard you go, for what choice do you have?
Stepping up onto the ledge, I glanced back one last time with a smile on my face. Aboard this new journey, this was the last time I would look back. It was time to start anew.
Go ahead, I say, gesturing forward. You walk with a nod, subtle showing of thanks. Same pattern, different day.
"Why now?" she sobbed. "I was so close! Just one more day!"
Death smiled. "It seems that you've got dues to pay."
