  3. Assumption is a tool ingrained in human communication and thought analysis that is in place to assure proper understanding without the necessity of thorough explanation. It has, however, it’s downfalls, and can often lead to irrational or improper conclusions or baseless ideas which defeat the original purpose of the expression.

  8. You can’t assume anything with these people. Don’t assume they remember what you told them five minutes ago, much less a week or a month or a year. Don’t assume that they understand or believe you. You’re probably wrong. But you can’t assume that they DON’T, either, because that’s when they’ll prove you wrong! Frustration… That’s the name of it.

  9. assume, and you make an ass out of you, and me. everyone likes to assume. it’s out of our control, because reality is based on observation, perception, opinion, and assumption. i guess in life the best thing you can do for yourself is find people who assume the same things you do.

  20. To assume something can be both good or bad. Sometimes, if you assume something wrong, there are nasty consequences. Assume also has double “s”, and in Bartending, something with double “s’ sometimes means we have to use Galliano, a vanilla liquer, in the drink.

  23. Sister Nunez taught at St. Francis, a conservative private elementary attended by an enclave of upper middle class Catholic children who resided in the neighborhood, the stiff progeny of parents had been taught to be weary of public schools. And she was every bit as strict as you might imagine. The nun liked to pace up and down the tape-marked aisles of desks in her classroom, always with her imperious ruler in her fist, ready to rap on the knuckles of anyone she caught in a brazen act of cheating, not keeping their eyes focused on their own work. And as much as she didn’t like cheaters, she perhaps tolerated snitches even less and one day, as if to illustrate her point–perhaps after having receiving some suspect intelligence by one of our newer students–she walked stiffly to the chalkboard and wrote the word “ASSUME” in big block letters in the middle of a black, empty space. Does anyone know what this word means, she bellowed and we all responded with the sort of temerity one reserved for such occasions. Not one hand went up; even the most brazen student in our class thought her question was merely rhetorical. Sister Nunez turned around in her habit and pressed the chalk down hard drawing two distinct perpendicular lines on either side of the “u” and on the last one she succeeded in breaking the chalk into two pieces. Then she turned back around and glowered at us. And she pointed the ruler at the chalkboard as if she was diagramming a sentence. When you assume something, she said, you make an “ass” out of “u” and “me”! The room was silent for a moment; shocked perhaps to hear her utter a profanity. And then a rolling wave of quiet titters came over the entire classroom–started by that same brazen student–which she silenced almost immediately by rapping the side of her well-worn ruler against the slate of the chalkboard. Then, before the visiting mother superior or a priest could come in and spot her odd improvisation, she quickly erased it with the long eraser and continued with the approved lesson.
