Warmth and gooey marshmallows, Dad turning me into a pyromaniac, the boys all gathered around and laughing, camping in the fall and missing first prize on the decoration contest to those stupid blow up things. We always knew how to be spooky.
We sit in a circle, camping chairs shifting and creaking as we twist away from the smoke and crane our necks after sparks. The hose is waiting on the lawn, all ready to go, leaking a little and spilling on some dandelions. I eat one marshmallow raw before spearing another on my stick. My sister is counting how many layers she can burn and pull off. I feel around for the Hershey wrapper. Gold embers pulse like breathing treasure.
burning hot logs cross-hatched across each other in a paralysed but flickering battle. A handful of expecting eyes peer into the depths of their struggle.

The bonfire lit up the sky with sparks. The children huddled around, fascinated by the light and the sparks which flew around like fireflies. They they joined hands and danced in a circle around the bonfire.

Hmmm…
Camp? Those weren’t really bonfires though. Just large fires with wooden benches all around them.
I think one broke one day and someone fell through to the ground. I think they ended up being ok. But it scared and upset everyone.

So much for the campfire that night.
Um.. which again, was not a bonfire.
I don’t think I’ve ever been to a bonfire.
