  1. The fear in Dorothy was heavy but she was assured by the little people who had greeted her that help was right at the end of that yellow brick road. Basket firmly under her arm and her dog at her feet, she moved slowly on that path cheered by her new friends.

  2. heavy,
you drop words and secrets into my soul
    to weigh me down.
each one working with the next
    to wall up my heart.
    and if that fails,
    you could always
    just smash me with them.

  9. I saw Larry Bailey making a brick wall at Bob Swallow’s house. It was the first time I ever saw him in blue jeans (and the only time). He had a crooked head. I don’t know how better describe it, and I can’t imagine how he got it. He is dead now. I think I would rather have a stone wall than a brick wall. My grandma Foster’s house was made out of old pink bricks, mellowed with age. They say my grandparents got those bricks from an old courthouse in Gering, Nebraska, that they pulled down. Probably to build a new WPA courthouse. The “WPA courthouse” was there when I was growing up. It is still there, but they have a new addition to it. The jail was in the upper story of the jail. I remember when Paul Whaley got put in jail for taking a car over the state line that he owed money on. I still don’t understand that one. We have always taken cars over state lines before they were paid for. I remember Mama taking us kids and Oneta Whaley with her girls, Becky and Janalee, to stand in the yard of the courthouse and holler up to their daddy. What a miserable situation that was. The Scottsbluff didn’t like the Whaley’s because they weren’t “old-fashioned” enough. Now the Whaleys are too “old-fashioned” for their own good–i.e., legalistic. I wish they had just turned their backs on the BMC in those days when they were treated so shabbily. I wish Mama and Daddy had taken us away, too. I don’t want to write about the BMC madness right now. It would get too long and convoluted. It is terrible to think about.

  28. I sit at the counter at work, and stare out the front glass windows, night after night, in the hours that no one else is stirring. I am restless. I am bored. I am working the graveyard shift. 33. As we walked through halls of ancient must and grime
we saw that what we sought
    was not the pleasure
or the comfort of small spaces
but a home among the lonely hills
the grass which called them brother
    in green and radiant beams
    a holy of holies.
we paused a moment on the way
let our eyes stretch long and wide
over mystic plains of endless, ageless mist
for which the sound of summer breeze
    was music,
    a thousand tiny fiddles
    washing past the hopeful hands
whose leaves reached ceaselessly for azure.
and as the noonday sun tired of its daily climb
it fell from its icarian flight
in feathers down beyond the mountains
    along the path
    not looking back for miles.
