  5. The bundle of thatch burned better than I had thought it would. Just a little grease on the end, and it made a great torch, who knew?

I grasped the end of it and crawled into the dark tunnel, holding my breath as my claustrophobia kicked in…

This was going to be a long journey…

  6. The bundle of blankets on the doorstep was of little consequence to her. That it was, until Avery heard a small, pathetic noise coming from within. “What the hell,” she murmured to herself, bending forward to scoop the materials into her arms. Upon further inspection, she found a small child within, a scar running from the upper lid of its left eye down across its face to its chin. A little girl with rose-colored lips and pale, peach-colored skin had been left on the landing in front of her door. “What am I supposed to do with you, little one?”

  8. “Let go of the bundle.”

    “No.”

The word was spoken with a simple clarity that echoed refusal in not only the obvious sentiment of the word, but in her tone, her posture, her attitude. Her eyes fixated him clearly, their lucid blue color burning a hole straight through his ugly face.

“I’m not letting go of it. You’ll have to kill me first.”

She had no time to say anything, because the bullet spiraled straight into her heart.

  14. She scrambled around under the trailer. Mama can’t know, no one can know. No one would ever know. With her fingers she dug, dug until the rocks and pebbles tore her fingertips, mixing blood and dirt. A burn that she would feel upon waking in the morning, surprise and confused, if only momentarily by her dirty sheets and mudd encrusted knees. Digging, “scrabbling in the dirt like a god damn animal,” her mother would say. When the whole was about as deep as her forearm she stopped, catching her breath, wondering if she’d been breathing at all. Brushing her hair out of her mouth, tasting blood and grit on her hand, she straightened up as much as she could, which wasn’t much. A piece of ply wood lay nearby, left over from the doghouse Mama’s last man, Tim, had made the week before Mama threw him out. Dropping the bundle in the hole and filling it in with the earth that was now sprinkled with her blood, she pushed the piece of plywood over top, “Stop those pesky, shit eating, yard wrecking dogs,” and crawled out from under the trailer.

  27. Everything we carry with us in life tends to get a little squashed. As a rule, it’s easiest to carry a lot of stuff around if you bundle it together — you only have two hands. Problem is, we knock all the pieces against each other, and they can end up pretty bruised.

  28. The bundle of sheets were still laying there, stark white against the wooden floor. I bent over to touch them, but Sally barked.
“What is it girl?” I asked. She sat down and looked at me. She looked too scared for a dog. It was almost human, the fear on her face.
“They’re just sheets…” I said. She barked again and slumped to the floor, resting her head on her paws. She was terrified of the sheets.

So, I guess I should have been, too.
