  1. I hadn’t seen him in years, but somehow I felt as though we had been together yesterday. My son had left home for the military when he was just eighteen years old, seemingly without a second glance at the life or the family which he was leaving behind. My husband and I felt abandoned, forgotten, even. Imagine pouring everything you have into shaping the life of your only child and having him abruptly leave you with a “Thanks, but no thanks.” It was unbearable. Of course, that was before we found the cards, the cards which he had written us every day since he had left. The cards saved our family.

The adults who had touched the cards yet remained, and the children too frightened to touch them stared in awe, as the streets slowly began to empty all across the city. Indeed, over 2000 children were said to have disappeared that day, and no one was quite sure where they had went.
