  2. When I was a little girl, I had a red coat with a black faux fur collar. A well-respected woman in our church had an identical one. I remember silently lifting up the back of it to see if it had the same foam-ish lining. My mother caught me and made a scolding scene. My pride in being identified with this woman of stature was quickly changed to childhood humiliation. I haven’t thought of this for years. Just let it go….

  3. The coat, now on the cold metal and off her tender back, scaled when she bent over to give her tongue to the floor in hope of getting crumbs. Another train arrived and she hugged her leathery arms to her blossom in beat to the deep roar of the proletariat scums. Them with their straight face and thin lips, pursed like winter’s hollow.

  13. I have a coat. It’s brown and cosy. Sometimes I wear it when I feel like hiding from the world. But most of the time I wear it because I don’t want to be seen or be seen for the person I truly am. It’s scary sometimes to be the person you truly are, because people don’t like accepting people who are different very often… it is a sad world that we live in. So my coat.. makes me feel invisible… makes me feel superior and just… safe.

As if the coat was an armor against the people who, loved and hated her.

  23. So, as i bleed out, the blood spills through my labcoat and i realize that perhaps i shouldn’t have worn the white coat into the firefight after all. I mean, i knew once i was done dying i’d be better, but i’d absolutely ruined the cloth in the firefight, and my bloodstains would never come out. While being immortal does have it’s benefits, the laundry is still a pain in the ass.

  38. Winston Churchill or David Copperfield used to wear these over their fancy suits. They generally had four-twelve buttons running down the front. They were made of gold, and less often, silver. These same people had canes that would match the coats in style. The coats themselves had tails like Maestros in an orchestral conducting setting. Animals have coats, too, but not the same kind.
