The collar was fastened tightly on top of the jar in order to preserve its warm contents inside: an award-winning mullberry jam which Aunt Edna expected to take another blue ribbon at the upcoming State Fair. The mullberry trees had produced a bountiful crop this year and so there was more than enough Masonry jars to fill the widow’s food storage. The remainders would be given to the special souls in her eastern bench neighborhood who had demonstrated repeatedly little acts of Christ-like charity toward Edna and her twenty-pound cat, Miffy, in the weeks and months after Uncle Earl unexpectedly passed away. And the remainder of this year’s crop of mullberry preserves would be given to the bishop for placement in the storehouse.
