This reminds me of the fat that wraps around my abdomen, the meat that hangs around my thighs. And I strive harder to run, hike, bike, swim it off. Fresh start.

  25. Coral is a beautiful color yet hard to explain really. It’s soft, feminine, and depending on the wearer, sensual. Of course, if some wrinkly old woman is wearing it, it seems like an old color. Which I guess is part of it’s beauty because it can easily adapt.

Like a long stream of water, Harriet was all about fluidity.

  36. It was the coral lipstick that her grandmother had always worn. She remembered the smell of it as the marks lingered on her cheek – even after she’d scrubbed it off. She remembered the way it stuck to parts of her grandmother’s teeth, the way it looked more like a Jackson Pollock painting with one color, rather than enamel and calcium. She couldn’t get the color, the smell, the taste out of her mind. She was trapped.

  37. And sometimes, when I would see Kevin, I would think of the ocean. I could smell him from just miles away, his thick amount of cologne covering every inch of his olive skin. I would breathe it in like a heroin addict, and then I’d touch him face, his cheek. I couldn’t help myself. Because Kevin was my ocean, and I could just see the coral in his eyes, the pastel colors glittering in his eyes. I could see the fish swimming through his veins, through my ocean.

Kevin was my ocean that summer. And I would find myself swimming in him, remembering all that we had. All that I wish we still had….

  39. coral is as coral does, floating in the oceans mud and solemnly growing and as it does the colours fold from out of cracks that once were barren in their youth but suddenly and mostly soon once retracted from their watery bed the colours loosen and falter again and its only when kept submerged in perhaps that kind of purity that the colours of the coral can be.
