  5. I sat there, understanding I was in trouble but not understanding why.

The worst part was knowing, in my five year old mind, that this was only the begining.

This was only the prelude- my mother’s meek attempt at acting interesyed in our lives: “go sit in the corner” is one of the only things I ever remember her saying- speaking at me and through me. Never to me.

I knew that once I sat still- knew that if I was quiet she would forget about me- as if the corner that I sat in simply split from the rest of the house taking all that was in it; the child’s chair and the child.

  17. She sat in the corner, staring out into space, a little bit sick to her stomach. Don’t think about it, just breathe, because in this corner of her mind, her solace, she relished the one sole comfort that she held on to. A corner of his heart, she just wanted a corner of his mind. Maybe she could dissolve into molecules and sneak into his soul, and maybe then he’d love her back.
