  19. Docks are where ships enter, unload and leave again. They are great places of commerce, of hard working men straining under immense burdens, or rich men counting their money and writing their reports, and now, of very few men at all, and mostly machines. Despite being a place of unequal value in the past, they now give very little value at all.

  24. He sometimes waited for Gabriel at the dock. Usually not. But water made him think of Gabriel, made him remember the refreshing cold of his skin when he was thinking hard and the way things tended to frost over when he prayed. Gabriel was never there, of course, but Raphael never minded waiting for him anyway.

If nothing else, it was a good place to meditate.
