  1. I remember when i was a working as a commercial fisherman and it took me a while before i really got good at tying the boat to the dock. i was never really bad but the rope was just too loose. practice makes perfect i guess.

  2. When I was in Lake Tahoe with my family one summer we took a trip to the dock just after some lame touristy museum that we visited. All I really remember of that part was standing on the dock and looking down between the planks and seeing all the little fish below me. They looked so happy and free and I was happy for them. I wished that I could swim all day like they could.

  4. i see the boat coming in. i race to the dock in hopes of seeing him. the proof that he was not lost at sea. as the boat pulls in, my hopes fade away. there are only 4 of 5 people on that boat…and he is not one of them

  6. I used to sit on the dock what felt like all summer. Fish swimming below and sun reflecting on the water. The boards of the dock were old and splintered. Walking on it barefoot was dangerous, but we kids didn’t seem to care.

  7. One time I was camping on the Saint Lawrence River and there was this dock that stuck out over the water. It was deep enough at the end that you could jump off without being hurt. The water was so clear you could see right to the bottom. I was still scared to jump. Deep water terrifies me. The thought that there is so much out there that I cannot see makes me cringe. I never jumped.

  11. when we pulled into the harbor, i saw a glimpse of a stranger. a stranger wading through the mist, wandering to the next dark corner of his life. i htought about calling out to him, letting him know that he was not alone, and we were both out here being strange together so why not grab a quick drink? i thought about it, but i kept my mouth closed along with my fist as i let another opportunity wander away aimlessly.

  12. The clouds of steam enclosed me as I walked the dock to the place he had indicated. It was sheltered from view between two cargo containers, the dim lights obscured by rolling fog coming in off the water. I waited, but not patiently.

  21. When you bring the boat back to the dock, it’s like bringing home a new baby. Wipe it down, make sure it’s safe, and clean it up.

    You want to make sure that will be comfortable and ready for the next day, with no worries. So take a good look around — are the bumpers positioned correctly, are the lines tight, and have you got the sheets in their correct place?

  25. I remember the dock at my mom and dad’s cottage – it was rotted and you had to be careful not to step on the holey spots or you’d break through. Every winter the ice would come and carry that dock out to the middle of the lake. We’d have to jump in the cold water in the spring and bring it on back to the shore. I loved that dock!

  33. dock. to sit in solemn silence on a dull dark dock. i remember theater warm ups still from middle school. interestingly enough i don’t miss it at all. except for the applause. i think everyone should know how it feels to have a whole auditorium of people clapping just for you.
