  2. in the night sky
go up in flames as I dream aloud into the clouds
so full of shame and doubt

    together.

  3. The trees were glowing. Or so it seemed. Flickering little dots of light. There nothing more amazing than witnessing beauty in flight. Be amazed.

  4. On steamy summer nights, when the fans did little to cool our bedroom, we’d stay outside until it was too dark to see, except for the fleeting glimmer of fireflies. They were magic, and despite my girly “bugs are yucky” attitude, I loved to catch them and hold them gently in cupped hands, waiting for the magic to happen again and again.

  5. There was once a hidden meadow that never had sunlight to create a scene or to light the way for weary travellers. The only saving grace that helped to guide the lost souls were fireflies that would appear out of no where and help them find their way. The fireflies had a name. It was hope.

  6. they are buzzing all around me. i can see lights like the universe float in gravitational rotations. it is so bright, but the darkness dims on the beacons. i trap the power in my hands to feel the energy of the lights. i steal the power for myself and set them free.

  7. in the first second i read this word ‘fireflies’ i couldn’t help but think of that annoying song that was on the radio earlier today! the song sounds like a 5 year old’s poem with a backing track, needless to say i hope i never hear it again…

  8. Light up the dark, and every summer remind me of being a child. Catching the stars and holding them between your hands, the more you could catch the better. Collecting them between your fingers, but in the end you have to let them go.

    Sarah
  9. thats my nickname. johnny ray calls me firefly. when i was little we used to catch fireflies tomato jars and cvut holes in the top so they could breathe. it reminds me of the fourth of july. and i don’t know what else to write and my roommate is behind me and pressuring me into not erasing evefyrhing but it’s a naturla reaction.

  10. I’m in love. It’s night and there are stars. There are beautiful fireflies swarming around. It’s like every single wish I’ve ever made is coming true.

  11. It was a warm summer evening. And Jason and Becca were surrounded by people but felt as though it was just the two of them. The fireflies serves as the evenings stars as the flitted about the dark blue sky. A warm breeze carried the sounds of bluegrass all around the party. It was a hopping time down at the bayou.

  12. captured fireflies
    momentary capsules of light
    pressed against the glass
    yearning for freedom
I wanted to make a house for you
    but sadly let you go.

  13. Fly in the nighttime sky, wings ablaze with their lonely light.. short to live and long to die….

    Lewis
  14. Fireflies only light up when they are flying upwards, which confuses me because I do not know if they can even see upwards. Wouldn’t flying forewards be more convenient? Maybe this is why it is a theory, and I just debunked it. Someone should pay me to do this.

    Abby D.
  15. Along the stonewall waterfront at Acadia National Park, we watched the sun set and the tide roll out as the fireflies lit the early evening air like joyful little bundles of promise – tomorrow will be a good day.

    JA
  16. What makes a firefly special, and not another disgusting bug? They glow and that makes them not ugly or gross but magical and special. There are people out in the world with this glow on the outside, but the people with it on the inside are the special ones.

  17. I used to catch fireflies back in old China. We would sneak up on them in the dusk unsuspectingly and patiently draw them into old tea jars. I miss home on many summer nights.

    Chen
  18. Fireflies light up the sky. We only see them at night. I used to grab them with my hand, through them onto the ground then smear them with my shoe. It would light up the sidewalk (only for a few seconds) but it delighted me as a child. It is getting warm outside,

    Katie
  19. It was odd. When we first sat down under the tree, doused in the darkness of the night, there only a few of them twinkling around. But somehow, as the night went on, they began to swarm. But it wasn’t like the unpleasantness of any other insect swarm. This swarm was a delightful light show, incandescently brightening the entire glen until I swore it was practically daytime.

  20. chicago warm night in summer. there were fireflies everywhere and i tried to catch them to see if they were really on fire. i was a little kid and it was fun. my stepmom gave me and my brother jars and we caught a few of them and then let them go. it was fun…random memory from one word…

  21. Fireflys are flying a round my head because I am supposed to not think…they float and turn yellow and disapear if its dark and you try to find them again you have to wait and this is a really run on sentance but thats okay beucase fireflies are ninjas in their own yellow lit up world. omg the bar is turning red. noooo -crys- fix my bar fireflies

  22. Fireflies make me think of dark and beautiful forests, they don’t seem like a real bug, they seem magical. I wish I could keep them in a jar and keep them in there through the night. It would make my bedroom more beautiful.

  23. Owl city. I love baby owls, we have them outside my house! it is so great to wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and hear them hooting as I pee. How relaxing. My house is very relaxing. thanks to my parents for their years of hard work, without it…no house.

    Raychel
  24. fireflies flit around my head and i look at them, smiling at the golden glow. the night is dark but the trees around me are lit up with red shades. i look at fireflies and i feel peace.

and i’ve found my muse. i’ve found a story idea. finally.

thank you oneword. fireflies have been lit.

    Hannah
  25. I really don’t like that song by Owl City. It’s too cutesy. Like a big stank death cab for cutie rip-off. Normal fireflies are swell though until they suffocate in the jar…

    Amelia
  26. fireflies eat away at the sun, until all that is left is a small gleaning light between here and the horizon. Sometimes my brain goes fuzzy and all I can see is this moment and the incurably bored future. I wonder if I am together, tightly together enough to make my life function. Without the help or prodding of others I do very little.

    Harper
  27. fireflies are fire roaming in the night they light they speak they fire light the day new dawn beginning the laughter is fire fire fire fire fire fire fire warm is the new day the blanket of your warm clouds around my shoulders in the sunlight on a blanket of blue in the green green grass so warm and blue and perfect and equal fire

    Katie
  28. Oh no! It’s stuck in my head already. I actually love owl city, but this song has completely ruined their image. Thanks to my disguting physics teacher, now every time I hear this word I think about how you can squeeze the butts of fireflies to get their glowy juice on your hands. Weirdddd, except I kind of want to try it. Reminds me of glow sticks getting all over my hands…which definitely happens every time I have a glow stick, because I’m really aggressive and destroy them.

    Kaitlyn
  29. song, something that goes WEEE and flies around, it has a bright butt, and is fun to catch, however they die really fast, especially when you leave the lid on!

    die
  30. Fireflies are really just insects with flashlights coming out of their butt. I suppose most people will talk about the Owl City song by the same name. But I won’t. Because it’s an obnoxious song. They’re always talking about silly things like frolicking through the daisys and looking at butterflies. And flashlight butt bugs. Bssst.

  31. they are littly itty bitty tiny lights that make me extremly happy in the summer time. Outside on the lawn in my backyard, just stitting looking up at the sky, and a little firefly flys by, and that honestly can make my day. To know something as little as a firefly is happy in the world everythings okay.

    Jennifer
  32. The backyard was alive with them. The family, their friends, grilling, a summer night in the ’80s.

He watched her move from aunt to aunt, laughing, kissing cheeks. The way her blue summer dress showed off her legs made him want to know her every thought…it would never matter how mundane they were, to him, each one would be a crafted gem.

    Bill
  33. I wonder if lighting the butt of a fly with a match would make them fireflies?

  34. fireflies are bright and beautiful. they would be cooler bugs if they actually set things on fire. Much more useful to the lost travelor. Just imagine, you are stuck in the woods, caught your meat but nothing to cook it with. Take a firefly but and light some twigs on fire. then you have a meal.

    Emma
  35. fireflies are beautiful because they glow. i don’t know anything else in life that just glows like that. I see things that glow artificially, but the way fireflies glow is real. They’re real, they glow and I see them all summer. How great is that?

    Mike

  40. I love the song, it reminds me of love and all the amazing feelings you get. It really reminds me what is really great about life…the line i think that makes the biggest impact is when he says that he would rather be awake than asleep :)
