  1. I like to flutter like a bird, soaring in the air. Landing on flowers, noticing their vibrant colors, watching the butterflies suck nectar out, while the bumblebees lumber along whimsically through the air looking for their hive.

  2. My heart’s all a-flutter is all I could think as I walked into the room. It was the first time I had ever tried to play an instrument this challenging for anyone of consequence. What in the world was happening? I couldn’t think. My heart was in my throat and my footsteps were so loud that I couldn’t think about anything but not walking into the door ahead of me. When I sat down in the chair, the cold was comforting. I felt that I had no body, just my horn and my pounding pulse. As I lifted the horn to play, I felt the rush of memory, like an auto-play button come upon me. I blew the first breathe and…nothing. I couldn’t play! I took a deep breath and tried again. This time, my lips pursed and pushed off-center into the mouthpiece. There was a little wiggle from my shaking legs, and the sound of the horn emanated, clear and high. Perhaps I could do this. I played my piece with no memory, just a presence. I finished, thanked the judges, and walked out. I was so relieved that it was over, that i didn’t even bother to care what my score was.

opens her heart and soul to the world

    flying
    flying
    flying
    high
    so very high.

  17. my footsteps on the sidewalk flutter with my ragged breath. I walk the usual route to school, late as usual. Look both ways. Step off the curb. Hike bag higher on shoulder. Notice untied shoe lace. Reach other curb. Always the same, every day. And every day I wish the same thing. Every day I wish for a school bus to come hurdling around the corner. That that big yellow twinkie of a vehicle with smoke flooding out behind it, a physical testament to the entropy inside, will smack into me. Dead on the street. Road kill. Wouldn’t that be sweet? Wouldn’t that be nice? The screech of the tires. The screams of the children inside. The shout of the bus driver to “sit down, and shut up” All swirling together as my blood paints the pavement, a halo around my head, a serene look on my face. I sigh. Back to reality. And I bend to tie my shoe.

  20. her eyelashes fluttered constantly in a way that annoyed me. her eyes were like the shutter of a camera, rapidly taking pictures that would never be committed to memory. i thought it was ironic that she twisted her hair around her fingers, and twiddled her thumbs. after awhile, i guessed it was cute to guys, but all it did was remind me of kindergarten, when i was too afraid to do anything but blink fast, confused, tap toes, too scared, and bite my lip, worried. i guess. but i hated that my own girlfriend did that. cause i wasn’t a guy and she wasn’t sending giggles my way, with her eyes that flutter for men.

  30. I DONT KNOW WHAT THE WORD FLUTTER MEANS REALLY. When I think of the word I think of butterflies or fairies fluttering around in the sunny afternoon, in a garden that is full of vibrant colors. Flutter is a word that isn’t used much in my language but I think it should be used more often. It can describe a sound, a movement, a place or a thing which doesn’t always make sense but neither do I half the time. Maybe I’ll just go back to daydreaming about the beautiful butterlies fluttering around in their magical garden.

  35. The butterflies are passive-aggressive, and so am I. Despite the flutter I’m feeling in my stomach, I still can’t decide if I should pursue you or not. Forget what I feel. Let’s be realistic. You could never want me, not as much as I want you. It’s too bad it has to be like that. Life isn’t fair that way when it comes to matters of the heart.

  39. and so she strolled past the view in front of me I had created for myself. a 5cm by 5cm spherical rectangular view of the world in front of me, created using cupped hands to block out the sunlight abusing my eyes. and as she passed so quickly through this minute space I had created for myself, my heart fluttered with the warmest of joys.

  40. My chest flutters at any remembrance of her, like some crushed insect, trying to fly again on wings yet to heal, if ever. How did i let her take so much from me? How can i ever give anyone the rest of me if all that’s left is this desperate congregation of battered nerves? And here I am, clinging to hope that she didn’t teach me to be just the same. I want this new beacon to be throned in my heart without evidence of a crumbling court. The young lighthouse is lit for me, but am I fit to fight the storm and reach a gentle harbor?
