  6. a heartbeat is the measure of time- of love, of moments, a rythym that can’t be disrupted. Soft, frantic, pounding, soothing- it is a natural beat that we all are attuned to. There is no escaping the allure of our first memory- the beating heart of our mother. To hear a heartbeat is to be in sync with the person whose heart it is.

  10. It was so cold, I could feel my fingertips freeze at the ends. My heartbeat got slower, and deeper, and I could feel the pulse through every vein weaken, and tire. I was not panicked, however, even though the situation was terrifying. I simply lay there, taking deep breaths.

  14. pulsing, throbbing. It fills your ears as you pause and catch your breath, when the walls feel like they’re closing in it’s so loud there’s nothing else to hear. A reminder of your mortality and an assurance that you’ll live for another second. A constant, a rythmn, a companion in the silent night.

  16. He’s asleep already, but I can hear the sound of his heartbeat as I lay my head on his chest. I imagine what might happen to me if suddenly that heartbeat were to cease. My whole life would change, and I imagine it would be liberation. I would be free of loving him, finally. Finally. Free to imagine a whole new life.

  17. your heart serves as your lifeline.
you feel each beat against your chest, and you know that it’s slowly, slowly, slowing down.

  22. your heartbeat was shallow under your thick warm skin,
the day went cold and your steady breath held me tightly.
i was a victim to your heart, to your heartbeat,
but never did you return the gift i gave you.
i could tell you would break my heart,
i could tell that you would smother it in that beat of yours.
    and i was right.
your heartbeat took mine in a lovely bray,
yet returned it with nothing left to beat for.

  28. doing all i can do just to be close to you. I love that song by Scouting for Girls. It’s so original; it’s funny and sweet but somehow true. I have this weird complex where I adore lovesongs (well, at least ones that are catchy and more than syrup) but I am totally unable to really express these sentiments myself. I must require a proxy. Sometimes I wonder if that’s normal in a woman, but maybe i just think society is telling me that I should be doing one thing vs another.

  33. Life! Heartbeat represents life to me..It is the pulse that sets our pace. Faster with excitement, like when I see Mike. It stops when I am scared. Always keeping me on track giving life’s blood and nourishing. Beeping along and keeping me going. The drum that beats our music of life. Slow or fast, weak or strong always keeping the pace, setting the pace and filling us up a new with every beat. Creating the music we dance to.

  36. thump thump thump…
pounding, breathing, heaving overboard. It pulls me in and sucks me out. Dreadfully alluring….Tragically mortal. I feel heavy and I feel light as I run along the garden path toward the thumping of a dying creature. You know you are going to lose it when you can no longer see the whiteness of air pulled tight around your face.
