  5. Sixteen years. That is a long time to have a companion. Though sometimes I was certainly ready to just throw her out the door. Her eyes were the color of grapefruit juice at times, clear and kind of yellowy green. Tonight I held her in my arms and her eyes were cloudy. She had not eaten for days, and I was force-feeding water with an eye dropper. Ah, my little furry friend, I will miss you so. We had a good life together. Oh yes, I do believe that cats go to heaven. Now, I can only hold you in my memories. Farewell, see you when I get there.

  6. If I were to hold you, I wouldn’t know what to do. You are so fragile that any strength would hurt rather than help. But I hold you any way, as best I can, hoping that maybe, somehow, my hold does some good. I know the truth, though. It is but my security blanket. I hold you because I do not know what else to do. I hold you because you are there to be held. Or perhaps, I hold you because I wish to be held.

  15. i wish he had held me while he was here. i can’t wait to see him over christmas. i need to feel his heart beating to understand that he is alive. i’m so glad he’s alive, i don’t know what i would have done if he had actually killed himself. he set himself on fire. that’s more than i can handle. i need to be held by him. i need to hear him breathe. talking to him every day isn’t the same thing. i need to hear him live. i need him to hold me close.

  18. She held me tightly, an embrace which warmed and comforted me, despite the abominable pit of sorrow deep within my stomach. It was a warmth which worked away, slowly flowed over me, through me, until it reached my core, and I became truly happy.

  21. She held my hand, it wasn’t like the normal two kids holding hands though. I felt a shiver up my spine conjoined the impenetrable pounding of my heart resonating through the depths of every hollow cave and every empty soul. This was it. I could feel sweat trickling down the back of my neck. I was in love.

  22. I am being held as I cry, only it is not being held by anyone I can see in full. I can see their hands wrapping around my arms and chafing up and down to keep me warm, and I can see their feet sticking out under the covers, shivering slightly. I can see the brown hair whipping around my face, but I can’t see any other indicator.
That is how I know that it is me, holding onto myself. It was me holding to the entire world, it was me chafing my arms to keep warm and sticking out my cold feet and shaking my hair around my face. This is how I know that it will always be just me, and this is how I know that I am the only one who can ever take care of myself. Nobody hears me crying, nobody sees me crying. Only I can feel it, and I try to stop it. I am there for myself, but I am the only one who has ever been there at all.

    Ashley Flowers
  23. She held the cat in her arms as she glanced out the foggy window. Winter had come early this year and the harvest wasn’t nearly finished. Each year the frost came with a surprise, and each year it destroyed the hard work of spring.

  26. Held in the grass. Held in my footing. What would a sessile creature do at this point? Better yet, what could a sessile creature do? Perhaps I am useless where I stand. Or maybe everyone else is moving around too much to realize what they’re missing.

But, basically, this story’s getting out of hand. I wanted to talk about the kitten. What happened to the kitten?

But the kitten wanted to fly away too. Just like the thing he held. He held it too well, though.

It holds me together and it holds itself together and together we hold hands but then we part and the world crumbles into darkness unless we can go back in time. So let’s go back in time.
