  1. Your mother has one. Your father has one. But why is it important to read a novel constructed of flemsy paper and and weak spine? Don’t do what people tell you to do.

  12. i was reading a paperback book, when i got sucked into one of the pages. as i looked around, there were just words, commas, and periods. i thought it be easier to get out of a paperback than a hardcover. it wasnt. i tried and tried but nothing.

  13. there used to be paperback novels, words on pages that meant something to people. It used to be about your imagination being sculpted and developed, finally coming to fruition at the end of the story. Now its all visual, and not nearly half as redeeming. Damn if it ain’t entertaining though. These days people don’t seem to have any regard for art, whether it’s literature, or painting. Movies seem to be the only form that reaches people, that and music, but not music is so diluted it’s hard to filter out the good and the bad to find those pearls that stay with you forever.

  16. The paperback felt so out of place on the bookshelf, surrounded by hard-covers with sharp edges and thick, ragged pages. They smelled moldy and dirty, and the paperback flipped its pages in the wind to alleviate the stench.

  17. paperback books have an authenticity that hardback books will never possess. whenever i go to the public library, i like going to the history section (full of very old books that are generally rarely used), pick a random book out of the shelf, open it & begin reading anything, enjoying the dusty, delicious smell of old library things.

  18. Paperback. There’s an odd bird flying above me. It’s not alive, necessarily, but it seems to be in its motion and its gentle swoop… It’s made of paper. Just moments ago I folded it up and released it into the air. It isn’t alive, but it’s beautiful. It’s paper head, wings and back…

  36. I bought a pile of paperbacks, grabbing them because I recognized the name of the author, or the title, or just because I liked the cover, and then I got lost in them, devoured them, became enchanted like by a magic spell. What I didn’t know then is that I was taking the first step towards a life I could never have imagined.

  37. I bought it for a quarter at a church’s rummage sale during an Indian Summer in Connecticut. This worn out, almost tattered book grabbed me and I read it in one sitting, only to find the last page missing. To this day, although I have read the end of the story numerous times in other books, I cannot remember it, as if it were only contained in the old paperback from a church’s rummage sale.

  38. Paperback is the most common book form found in bookstores. Unlike hardcover, paperback issues are easier to carry and cost relatively less, therefore making them the most commonly used book form on top of merely being the most commonly found book form.

  39. I see this and immediately think of the beatles; and i am reminded of how powerful a man john lennon was, and how inspiring he is. I face a hard part of my life now, and I look to him for help in spirit. Thank you John

  40. paperbacks are so fragile. They bend under pressure, you can rip the covers off and steal the book illegally, you can do all sorts of things to them.
but they’re also the book that shows it the most when they have been loved. The creases in the spine are like crows feet on a person. Evidence that they have smiled with gusto.
