Planets swirl around the warmth of a star. Philosophers used to talk about a celestial music that only the stars could hear but maybe the music echoes in every heartbeat, in every leaf’s breath, in salt crackling into the sea, in the call of home to the salmon, in the sap rising in the spring, and the way I look at you and think we could be friends.
At night, after the brilliance of the sunset, I look in the other direction and see the planet Jupiter, which is now in opposition, the closest to Earth and also reflecting the bright light of the sun, so that it became the brightest object in the sky.

The planets surprised me more than I expected them to. We always thought there might be other life out there, and it would be a glorious thing when we discovered it. It seems foolish now to have not expected things to go very wrong.
