  1. Our heart is the pouch where we keep all our most treasured memories. Not in our brain, that’s where thoughts are. In the small pouch that is our heart, we keep the real stuff, the ones that makes us want to keep living… or not.

  2. The mother kangaroo carried a heavy load in her pouch. It’s sagging head wet with sweat, her legs staggered, and her heart was losing the battle. But she had to live, to find a way to help her child… before it was too late.

  3. She had a brownish sort of pouch hanging over her shoulder. I later learned that she called this a “satchel.” To me, it looked just like a pouch, but I liked the way the strap of it framed her breasts. I can still remember the way she ran her thumb along the bottom of that strap, smoothing it back and forth as she talked to me. Sometimes I would let my stare drift from her emerald eyes to watch her rub that strap, although I was imagining something a little less PG-13. But I wouldn’t stare long, those eyes wouldn’t let me stray too far.

  4. my dad told me I had one.

I am not a marsupial, I replied. He said it was supposed to be a compliment. My mother reminded me that men liked women with curves.

Not curves on their STOMACHS, I said.

My dad rolled his eyes, asked if we could stop talking about it. But I know it will come up again. It always does. I mean, it’s not like I’m a cow either. But it still didn’t make me feel good about myself. At all. Like I don’t have a hard enough time already.

  5. Kangaroos have pouches that they carry their babies around in. pouches also makes me think of fanny-packs and large bags and the pouches on the backs of the seats in cars where you can store stuff. How we stretched them out in dad’s truck and then had to tie them off so that they were even useful again.

  20. Of course, I think of kangaroos. How cliche is that? But if you really think about, kangaroos’ pouches are disgusting. I mean it’s pretty much a flap of fat that an animal lives in. I’m sure it gets hot and sweaty and smells funky. And imagine if something fell into it, how would the kangaroo get it out?

These are the strange things I think about.
