Try not to think to hard, just go back. Drift into those other times when you believed that history happened in black and white, just like the movies. It isn’t time to work or even to play. Just allow yourself to close your eyes and float.

I remember when I was a kid, thinking I was happy. Upon reflection I realise I was making the best with what I had. Sure, I had happy times, but I remember the sad times the most. I don’t remember many ‘I love you’s. Shame, really. Children deserve to remember a happy childhood. I wish I could.

Remember that balmy steamy late summer afternoon. We had a couple of drinks and you took me to the creek, gave me a joint and made love to me that I remember 25 years later. Thankyou my true true love

I remember what you felt like under me, all sand and smooth dark skin, because it was summer, you remember? Young and addled with heat and illusions of sunset beauty we believed we could be as reckless as we chose and it would still seem poetic the morning after, the season after in November, when your brittle bones became soured with cold and “beauty” was just a word in an English essay…

My grandfather, holding my hand, looking out to sea, eyes filled with memories long forgotten. Alzhiemers had its grip. White hair, smoke stained moustache, once glamorous, now showing the strain of war time memories.

do you remember the time that the fishbowl fell over the bookshelf edge because alice was pulling on the doily underneath and all the fish came out? i just remember that, can’t you– that moment when we found them out there like strangling to death and you sprinkled some of the last fishbowl water on them as we screamed to help them breathe but they just heaved their last gasps at endless intervals and we cried all the way through dinner, story, toothbrush and bed until we passed out exhausted. in the morning the bowl was in the dish drainer. the fish were gone.
