whether someone or something (an action?) is respectable or not I think should be in the eye-of-the-beholder as it were… the word conjures up images of establishment and older persons- really it shouldn’t though. It would be nice if one felt the word could be more readily applied to a broader range of people- if whatever virtue is implied by ‘respectability’ was more readily seen in less obvious places… but then this is just me thinking aloud and there’s probably something circular in here somewhere!
Jim
When ones pretends to be respectable it is much easier to get ahead in the predatory capitalists system. To be truly respectable, one must care with heart.
Brandi Williams Palmer
I’ve already “Oneworded” this word before… but that was when I was testing out this website. now I am signed up for it!! It’s fun, I think you would know. But anyways, I don’t think that many people are respectable. Unless you are Mr. Darcy. Mr. Darcy is extremely respectable.
Elessar
A respectable man is hard to come by… perhaps a respectable woman even harder. But why is that? What has changed about our society so much that a person no longer even respects himself or herself? We are a people who base their worth solely on material possessions, looks, and other meaningless basis of judgment. “Respectable” therefore no longer has the meaning it once did.
Meg
Respectable. I wish I was respectable. I am not. I am but one person of many who has lost their own self respect and with it, their ability to be respectable. I have failed at life in the sense that I have not succeeded in maintaining one of the very few things that we, as humans, are allowed to maintain strictly by our own willpower. It is respect that we lose over time when we do nothing, and respect that is so hard to regain. Respectable? Pfft. What a joke.
Kyle
Sitting down next to the crown prince of England at a gala was indeed one of my most memorable experience’s and trying to act respectable and not mumble like a
country bumpkin.
Linda Berryman
The man was so respectable because his mother was not. I don’t even know how that makes sense, but it does. It does because it’s true. did you alsop know that fish are respectable because some of them eat each together? Well, that was a lie. That makes them… disrespectable… Is that a word? I dont think it is… maybe… But actually that whole thing was a lie. That man wasn’t respectable at all for that reason.
Elessar
I don’t want to be.
The common misconception is that I’m incapable, but that really isn’t so.
I just don’t want to be.
And frankly, I don’t find anything wrong with that. Can you be respectable to everyone you meet? I didn’t think so. That black guy who just shoved past you carrying your wallet that you didn’t even notice he stole from you, who’s cursing straight at you now. Yeah. You gonna be respectable to him? Tough luck, sucker.
Shiyang
This is something you should be towards any one you meet. You give and you will receive. There is nothing wrong with having or being this. This will make you a better person and make this a better world.
Carey
The man walking into the book store seemed respectable. Me, standing behind the counter with an interest look. My life, love, everything has always felt hopeless until now.
BE RESPECTABLE. I don’t understand when people act like idiots. Treat everyone well, and we will all be friends. Is that too much to ask for?
hi
Sometime I am not. This is something that I think everyone wants in life because it means that other people who surround you think of you with respect and positive emotion. everyone wants to be respected because it is reflected in love from your community. And all we need is love.
Lauren Incandenza
No I’m not respectable. I’m not even decent. I’m not the guy you bring home to Thanksgiving dinner to meet mom and dad. I’m the guy you bring over to meet your ex-boyfriend when you need someone to break his kneecaps. I’m the guy you introduce your least favorite co-worker to when you want to make sure she doesn’t make it to work on time. No. I’m anything but respectable. But I do have standards.
Doug McIntire

He was a respectable man, as he always had been. He gave a certain amount of respect to everyone he met and expected the same sort of respect in return to a certain degree. However, there was one person that always managed to escape giving him her respect. A petite brunette. His secretary.
Emily
I wish that I could be a more respectable person. I wish boys wanted to date me, and show me off to their friends and not just keep me hidden for a good time. I wish I was nicer to people that I don’t like. I wish I didn’t use the word I so often and that I could focus on other people. I wish people took me more seriously as a person.
Kelsey
I wish I was respectable. I used to be. But I hid everything. I wish my family was respectable. But they lie. To me, to everyone. I wish my friends were respectable. But they lie too. They are fake. In this world, no one really is respectable.
Jordan
I’m not respectable. I don’t care, either.
If I cared, I don’t think I’d be sitting here, without a college education, gripping a Marlboro tightly between my index and middle fingers.
I’d shut my mouth when my thoughts were inappropriate.
I’d sell the band shirts I’ve had since I was 15 for suits; dry cleaner’s only.
But that’s only if I cared. And caring is an emotion that I simply do not have.
Emma
are you respectable? do people respect you, is your word worth something or nothing?
kelley
I hate the word respectable. Who really knows what it means? Who are you to say that, just because so and so is a virgin, or so and so says this that they’re respectable? Really, who has the right to judge like that? Being respectable is all that ever matters to anyone.
Abby
If I were respectable, then that would be the best thing of all. I would be loved by my family and friends, and wouldn’t feel so bad when my dad would call and tell me how much he wishes I would do more. I hate the feeling of not being good enough for them.
Laura Ann Castillo
It’s hard to feel respectable with all this blood and guts purging out of chest through my shirt. Ok, so it’s invisible. Well alright I’m the only one who can see it, but it doesn’t mean it’s not real to me. I’m not delusional, just in a little, ok a lot, of pain… And because of that some days I don’t feel respectable.

“I want to look…respectable.” “That’s why you keep every little thing to yourself?” He scoffed at me.
“…Yes,” I whispered. He was making me feel ashamed that I hid diaries throughout my room, keeping all of my secrets to myself. I started to shake, knowing tears would come soon enough. I turned on my heel and walked away from it all.

am i? what have i ever done to deserve the title “respectable”? they trust me with their children, their problems, their hopes and yet i can’t decide if i should hold them in my hands. do i warrant such esteem? am i respectable?
Hanna Aven
Respectable seems like something of a lost age. What is respectable these days? Someone who holds a door? A guy who looks at a face instead of a chest? No. Respectable is the man who loves you for you, love your faults along with your strengths.
Anna Parsons
He was highly respectable, although no one would have looked twice at him. John smiled, a simple maneuver, and lowered his eyes to the floor shortly after.
“Well, I think that we would invest in something more cost efficient.”
The men raised their eyebrows. “Like?”
“Flying monkeys.”
“Robotically made, correct?”
John smirked. “Not exactly.”

It is respectable when people care for others, animals, take responsibility for their actions, do what they feel despite others’ opinions…..It is not respectable that too many of this does not happen.
people i know arnt that respectable, but the few i meet that are, have impacted my life more than they know. respectable people always seem to shine brighter, giving us something to look at, to hope for. i hope im like that, and that others veiw me as such.
Curious Twist
Yo be respectable one has to show respect to everyone, whether they are a child , a drunk, an aging old man. Everyone deserves respect.
Mary Lou Wynegar
Now there are actually two words, here–respect and able. It’s really a self defining word as in one is able to repect said object. To some this is an old fashioned word, which they seem to think is redundant. I happen to think its cautious. That is all I can think of. :)
J
I have already written about this word, but I suppose that I can do it again. Respectable implies respect. respect implies that there is something about you worth looking up to. Which means that some part of you needs to be worthwhile. I find that oftentimes, conveying an appearance of respectability is more a lie than any true value you hold.
Katelyn
who knows what it means to be a respectable person. I mean really. We all have fronts that we put up for someone to see, for someone to believe we are respectable people. Worth it. But the word can’t convey what you feel inside. Some days, it is tough to feel respectable to yourself.
Katelyn

Most people don’t even know why they want to be respectable. However others are always drawn to respectable people. They seem to ooze trust, honesty and the kind of person one wants to be associated with. I hope to be one of those people.
