There was a rustle in the bushes. It was too loud, too obviously distracting to be the dog. It sounded like something that wanted to be found. A cold sensation overcame me. I felt as if I were frozen and couldn’t move. Again, the rustle. It sounded like it was getting closer. If I didn’t make a decision soon…I don’t know! Would I die? Would I be fine? Was I completely overreacting. One last rustle….then everything went dark.

The leaves rustled behind me as I whipped around, sweat dripping down my brow. I didn’t see anything but the foreign foliage surronding me. I looked up at the sky which was a deep, unnatural color and breathed out a sigh. It was nothing. Surely it was nothing. As I wiped the sweat from my forehead, something jumped out.

The leaves rustle in the wind in hues of yellow and orange, like her hair billowing over her shoulders as she looks over the handlebars with a smile that stops you in your tracks.

the fall leaves start falling…early in summer…never too late…never too early…
forever still and there
until the moment starts again
every morning
every night
until the summer again
and again
and again
and again
everlasting breeze
and wind
and snow
and heat
cold
everything in between
forever and always

The world fell still as the last wind rustled through the leaves that had long since fallen. The dark had been long, too long. Nothing remained, to live or love, within the earth. There was no coming back from what had been done.

The gown rustles on the floor, skirt swaying, heavy lace. The woman lifts the basket as the sun shines on the dishes in the sink.

Papers rustled.
The sound of pen scribbling came on and off.
No one was speaking — as they should — but yet the silence was so loud.
For the same goal, but somehow they would never work as a team.
Time was almost up. The examination was going to end.
