    such as:

    as far away as possible
    from you.

    for, you see:
you caused my thoughts to shift
    directly to you.

i shifted positions as i waited

  19. so there was a shift where I had at work and all the other servers did not want to take it, so i ended up just working the shift… It was from five to three am…. wow… that is long… but it feels so good to go to sleep after that shift… I sleep so well it is amazing. I cannot wait to just lie down in my comfortable bed and hug myself with my covers so that I might be able to dream about the one I really love. About marrying someone for time and all eternity. I cannot wait until that day.

  24. I shifted into place as the man lifted himself over me. was this what I wanted to do with my life? to feel so bad and overwhelmed. to feel like I was nothing more than a disgusting worm for men to take and poke and prod and have their way with any time, any place.

his hot breath crawled over the skin of my cheek and I closed my eyes with disgust. god what was I doing here? letting this man slide into me, take me into this world I so hated. he began to move and i began to space. it was the only way i could escape the sweat and the groans. it was the only way i could live.

  28. shift is a key that allows you to change the other keys. not on iphones, though. or blackberries. it’s more complicated there. shift is a way to change, in general. i suppose i’ve never thought about that, but that makes it a damn good name for that key, doesn’t it? anyway, that’s shift.

  30. The shift key capitalizes things. Not a lot of things– it’s not the lock. But just one letter at a time. It’s like a slow transitionary process. I can shift sections of my life up, but I don’t think I’m ready to lock into the new me… you know?

  31. shifting gears.

when I was sixteen, I learned to drive stick. I had no choice. My family’s only car was an old girl, red as a siren, with a cassette tape player and crank windows, and naturally a manual transmission. It was difficult for my teen brain to learn when to shift gears, for it required a shift of the mind. But now–it’s instinct.

  37. Shift – sometimes, if we can just shift our vision away from something that we’ve always been obsessed over, we can find something even more valuable. Something that has always been around but we just don’t notice it because of our obstinate nature.

  40. At first I started to write in the name box, but I suddenly realized, with the help of Birdsoul, that I should be writing in the larger box above it – so I shifted around my perspective of space-time continuum, and began writing this, to the point where I am at present, writing this. I have written that. I wrote that.
