  1. The bed was the first one that I’d ever slept on that wasn’t as hard as a board or somewhere in the middle. Then again, it might’ve been the weight of the person hovering over me which made such a difference; The fluctuations in pressure sinking me into the bed like a field of the greenest grass, but over and over.

  5. A putrid smell similar to rotten eggs and cabbage gone bad came from the sink. It was littered with scraps of left over food. But what made it worse was a residual ring of blood. All of it made Lt. Derek wince(a man thirty-four years on the job wasn’t suppose to do that) and he recoiled from it, nosed scrunched up, and eyes squinted.

“No evidence found yet, sir.” said the voice in behind him.

“Keep searching. There has to be some.” He covered his mouth and headed for the door that led out into the small side yard.

His eyes burned and the tears began to form. A cold October wind blew past him. And the barking of dogs surrounding the house on both sides met his ears.

“This has to be the worse case, I’ve seen in years. Probably the Stookoe one was worst. But this takes a close second.” he grunted.

  17. I reached under the sink to see if the detergent was still there. Often it went to different locations but today it was there. I poured hot water into the sink and lots of soap. I plunged my hands into the water feeling the heat rise in my blood. A wonderful feeling. Washing dishes was not a chore now, but a pleasure. Lifting each dish and washing it and setting it in the drain tray was meditative, hands again in the reassuring heat. Again another dish. down to the cutlery, not as much fun as a big dish but you could do more than one at a time.

  21. A sink is something one desperately needs when one’s dishes are filthy. Why is it even called a sink? Is it to do with the idea of the dirt ‘sinking’ down the small hole into a distant world, deep underground from which it shall never be able to escape.

  40. She didn’t know what to do. It was leaking. Common sense said to call a plumber, but there was zero chance of one at this hour. She could call Nicholas, but that would defeat the purpose of their cool-off. “Stupid sink,” she muttered. Trudging off to bed-for there was nothing to do now-her phone suddenly went off. It was Nicholas.
