Deep and rich. The one true treasure of the earth. Something that is slowly slipping away from us. The foundation to all that is and will ever be. An all important stop in the circle of life. Plant mecca.

no one likes dirt. i feel bad for those people who toil the soil, who plant the trees that make oxygen and allow us to breathe.
such were the words of the suburbanite, looking out on his green grassy backyard, with flowers in full bloom. such were his words.

soil is dirty and you use it to plant things in. i soiled my pants. i got soil on the carpet. you are the soil that helps me grow. my smile blooms from your laughter. my love grows from your words.

The flowers are so pretty this time of year. Maybe its the soil. Maybe its the sunshine. Or maybe even the rain, even though it has been lacking. It’s raining now…
Katie
it is dirty. it is smelly. i hate it. it’s the reason i hate dirt cake. it has worms in it. i hate worms. it makes me weed the garden. i HATE weeding the garden. it stinks.
kim
Soiled my pants again today. Not really, but sometimes I wonder what would happen if I did. Would people look upon me with disdain? What if I could not help that I soiled my pants? What if it were a medical condition? What douches some people can be.

soil? like dirt i guess. it is brown and smells of the earth. dirt and soil. what about sand? it is just made of little tiny rocks.
Ali
I love digging in the soil. Its so cool how worms come out of the soil when it rains. Their little homes get flooded and the wind up on the pavement and end up being stepped on and run over by cars. It’s really sad. I find dead dried up worms everywhere the morning after rain storms. But oh well. That’s life right?
mia
Dark and moist, like summer nights. I stuck my face in the tiger lily to pick up its aroma, not realizing that my face would be powdered with ocher from the flower’s semen.

Soil turning to mud when the water hits. First rain in a while, dead worms on the sidewalks. Water is their main composition, yet it’s the very thing that killed them. How could something that is apart of us make that fatal contradiction?

He soiled his pants before I could reach him. “Shit!”, I screamed. And then the hilarity in that profanity hit me. I backed against the wall for support as I let out my hysterical laughter in bright wails and heaves.

My mother plants beautiful flowers in the spring, and the fall, all the time actually. And my favorite are the snap dragons. I’ve never actually managed to make them snap, but they are so cool looking that I just love them. I also like the day lilies.

The soil was rich and black, fertile. Just like the new relationship should be…but wasn’t. How to make it better she wondered. But like deciding what to plant, Norah couldn’t come up with the right answer just yet.

He dug his nails into the ground, soft earth coming up between his fingers. It escaped under his finger tips, leaving them soiled for ages he was sure, but it didn’t matter. The small earth worms poked their heads out of the ground blindly, not sure what they were doing or where they were going or why they were being removed from their home so that a plant could take their place.
Gabi
I think of a corpse buried deep in someone’s garden, worms crawling through it, murder marks fading with time, no chance of ever being found, secrets lost and covered forever.

i kind of wish there had been another word besides soil. i don’t like soil. it makes me think of bugs. i hate bugs. i get paranoid sometimes, or a lot of the time. like everywhere i turn, there’s something crawling on the wall or up my arm.
maryam
it’s brown, well more of a brownish black, really. it is in the ground and it is pretty much the basis of all plant life, which obviously we as animals can’t live without because plants give us oxygen!

soil. earth. make me eat.

dirt, its is how plants grow. Its where they get their nutrients. Without soil there would be no oxygen because the plants couldnt grow, therefore there would be no life. Soil also makes your hands dirty, it has bugs and nasty germs, not something you would want to eat but still a very important factor to our life as humans.

Her hands caked in soil, she kept kneading the ground below her, preparing it for planting. It was much too hard now, but it would be fertile. That was all that mattered.
Stef
Soil is what plants grow in. It helps provide nutrients for the plants and helps them grow properly.

The soil beneath my feet was moist and soft. I ran barefoot not caring who or what was behind me, just knowing I had to get out. But the soft soil made it hard to run and I tripped flying through the air into a murky puddle full of questionable liquid.

The garden your backyard is over run with weeds. The soil is stale and hard, you remember a time when it was fresh. Sun driven days working with mother on your knees to create new life.
Robert
The soil is dark and fragrant, like the clear plastic dispensers of coffee in aisle four of the Safeway. It makes Danica smile to connect these dots: dirt to coffee, gardening to stocking shelves. The two things that calm her mind and allow her to get her thoughts away from panic.
Rose Wolf
soil is something the ground is made of, when its wet it is mud. Soil is brown and gritty, worms like it, soil is crunchy if you eat it, no really it is. dont eat it! Soil is found under grass.

From which the earth grows. The very flesh of Yggdrasil, our lord and world tree. To say it is a dirty thing is an idiotic blunder made only by those with no understanding of nature or the forces that drive it. They probably fear death.

The temprature filled his head with dread of moving back into his place in the soil whre he had made his temprary home…one that avoided his capture

Soil supports life and without it, all would be lost.
Soil grows food and habitats for all life on earth.
Tobias Wilkie
Soil is a beginning in many ways. Without it flowers would not be in existence. The world would seem much less beautiful without flowers. So therefore we should appreciate the soil and what it does for our soul.
Jennifer Ritchie
Just another word for dirt and disgusting. But also is what gives the earth life. how can one thing be so magical and filthy at the same time?
Waffles
soil is one of those things that you cant do without, you need it for nearly everything, farming, building, digging, mud-pies… if we lived on a planet with just rock then we would not have evolved into the sophisticated beings we are! nothing we now know would havebeen possible if we werent able to farm.

I walked outside into the warm summer heat. I looked down at teh soil my mother had just laid out yesturday so she could plant her lillies. I never helped her with spreading the soil but I always thought of her as a giving woman.
