  3. This is NOT a mexican hat. this is the british or european spelling of the word Somber. It simply means solemn or sad, serious, not joyful or exciting. A funeral is a sombre event. The face of a little girl whose mom is ill might well be sombre as she worries about her mommy. There could be a sombre mood in a place that had little hope, like waiting for the gas chamber in a concentration camp.

  5. It was a sombre day. The sun had slept later than usual and the trees were still. Ramon had felt this way before, but, today was different. He knew the time had come when he would have to say goodbye to his beloved Amy. She would be leaving in a short while to go back to San Francisco.

  11. it would have been nice to have an English word given for this exercise but seeing as how everyone is trying to make Spanish the common language in the US this doesn’t really surprise me. It’s the turn of “change” in our country and it’s here whether we like it or not.

  29. things were looking serious. there was no joy on anyone’s face as I stood before them to inform them of the situation. The news was not good; i could not put a false face on things, but must tell it like it was. Everyone’s eyes were upon me, but not one smile anywhere. A great collective sigh rose from the crowd and that only served to dampen what little cheer I had within.
