  5. Shocked. Or just taken unaware. I am startled by almost anything when I am concentrating and something else comes up. It shakes me up and often I am unable to regain that same level of concentration. Being startled is being unprepared for something to happen; to be seen; to take place.

  12. I turn around, and you’re not there. It’s always disconcerting to be all alone.

But that’s not really what spooked me at all; what spooked me the most is that, when I turn back, you’re there with a smile that says, more than any words, ever can, “You are mine, for always and for ever.”

And there’s absolutely nothing in the world ever said that has been truer than that, really.

  13. Surprise! The word “startled” is not in my active vocabulary – I guess it means something like surprised or confused but I will definitely have to look it up before using it! This would add to my personal glossary and also make me feel much more satisfied with myself and still I seem to have a second or two before teh first minute was over, or what? I have even corrected two typos while typing so my speed is not bad at all, do you agree with this or what I wonder how to know when that minute was over and if I will have no more time for typing by then or what

  17. I was startled by my own excitement. I didn’t know I could be startled anymore, which only served to further startle me. I had stopped feeling anything beyond boredom, lost in the monotony of life. This was something new… yet distantly familiar, like waking up from a nap. This nap had been half my lifetime, so I guess I overslept.

  29. I think its pretty awesome when you are startled into doing something that you never would have done before. Startled into a new way of living, thinking, of being. Startled into a way of living your life that perhaps hadn’t been an option or even a thought before. To be startled into a different form of consciousness is possibly the purest way to find yourself scared into action. Bring on the fear – try something new.

    Elizabeth Marie

  31. He, she, they, who, me, you–

    Startled.

We weren’t called oblivious for nothing, you know.

We lived in our own little cloud, our own little sheltered bubble, all but hidden behind rose-tinted fogs smelling of sweetened cotton candy. It was a simple life, yes. Very simple indeed. But it was nice. I always did go by the saying of “ignorance is bliss,” after all.

    We, they, who, who, /who/–

    Startled.

Then we were plucked from soft clouds and thrust into icy water to fend for ourselves, and our cotton-candy fog was eaten away until we were bare and vulnerable and /naked/ to all the atrocities we had always remained hidden from.

  38. Startled is a very confusing emotion. It’s like shocked, but less so. You can be startled by a falling bird for example, but shocked by someone driving over the falling bird whilst the bird is still falling. Startled. Starts with start. It really has nothing to do with the word start at all.

  39. It had started me that i had acted like I had after he had told me that he was leaving. I had cried and slapped him, the slap had been hard enough to leave a mark.He just stared at me with sympathetic eyes and muttered sorry. He wasn’t sorry I knew it.But It was not like it was his fault he had to leave my pessimism was contagious, he had to leave. Not like anyone could stay with someone like me as long as he had without getting fed up and finally leaving.
