  1. Hot. Hot and humid. Typical of a New york afternoon, in the tunnels below the city. The usual dank odor of the homeless was present, but something today was… different.

    Ruben Espaillat
  2. The subway was late again. Robin would be late for work another day in a row. What was he supposed to tell his boss? How would he explain that the subway was late without his boss not believing him. Robin hurried along the street to a taxi cab. “Which way?” the Cab driver ordered. “To my work please; just 3 blocks west.”

  3. My hair blew back as the subway passed. As it slowed down to a stop and opened the doors, I tossed the backpack with my notes on the story about Finnigan on before me. Sooner I should get left in New York than them.

    Copland
  4. I was in the subway last week. A man looked at me. I could tell all he wanted was to talk, but the streets these days…I just wanted to get home. I cried myself to sleep that night.

  5. He never failed to take the subway, never wanted to take anything but. He was never late; the same route every tuesday and thursday, always for the same reason. So many people, so many different lives and agendas; with so many people focused on their own life he could be who ever he wanted. It was an escape, his momentary pocket of freedom. He didn’t have to abide by the expectations of his parents or his friends, he was free. He could smile and wink at the girl five places down; he could ignore every single mom wanting his spot. But most of all he could let his fingers gently intertwine with the hand suddenly next to his. He could look at THAT person next to him, with out hesitation or the judging eyes of those around them, and say “Hey…i’ve missed you”.

  8. The subway smelled of rotting meat and sweat. The summers here were brutal. I can see the mans head in front of me bobbing to the music on his ipod. The way he looked I would have thought he stole the $300 ipod, listening to the rap he also riped off the internet.
Sweat rolled down my forehead. I want so badly to go home and take a shower. Hitting every pore in its path.

  13. i get on the subway train, and I’m coming to see you for the last time. I know that I want it to be raining, setting some sort of dramatic scene. But it won’t be. It will just be sunny when I get there, and I’ll pet your dog, and I’ll forget what i planned to do.

    Rachel

What people dont realize is that exercise is probably the most important thing to getting healthy and losing weight! I guess I should probably his a gym.

  26. she stepped into the subway station. her eyes cast down, deep in thought. she remembered all the moments here, with him. in this exact spot, where they mingled like two lovers, entwined. their fingers clasped so tight, you would have never believed he would let go. salt water formed, almost dropping in perfect spheres from her eyes, and she figured that now, it was the best time to end.

  27. I was at a subway one day. It was in the Queens. But that isn’t the important part of it. The important part is that she was there. Oh, was she a Goddess amongst men.

  28. The subway
    pulled up to the station.
    A hand,
    trembling,
    clawing at the metal door.
Sparks flying into the black night,
    igniting the floor,
flames rising up to the ceiling,
    dark and damp
    like a cave,
    lights hanging down
    like stalactites.
    Cool earth
    burning.

  29. London, underground, tube, colorful, hot, bright, freedom, closure, something dirty but fun and convenient at the same time…independence, yellow, lonely, people watching, smells, smiles noise air, connections, busy

  30. There’s always been something really romantic about a subway in my mind. People rushing past one another, on their way to wherever they need to go, brushing past any number of strangers on their way. How many lives do we touch as we make our way on our commute? How better off are we that we’re limited to only that?

    QueenieCarly
  31. Subways remind me of New York. A city that is so alive both above the street and far below it as well. It jet-sets you across town in the blink of an eye and pops you up in an entirely different world.

  36. Subway. Is that a way that is under or beneath another, more ostensibly usable way? Is the subway a way less traveled? Or maybe subterranean? Or is it maybe a way that SHOULDN’T be traveled? A way that’s less desirable or more unsavory… A way that leads to places you surely don’t want to end up.

    Fallon Ray
