  1. The sway of the world has pulled me away from you. I still work downstairs in the house, and you still work above me, and we still have conversations when it gets dark sometimes, in the lamplight. Perhaps you feel that my blood has stopped rushing to the rhythm of your thoughts. Sometimes, you say something to me that makes me feel as if you’re wondering where it got lost, groping for it in the unlit areas of me. Most of the time, I assume and understand that you never knew, never reciprocated, and that sense I had of our souls overlapping was merely an illusion of a glamorous time.

  15. I learned to sway in the dining room. My mother taught me how to move just so; she taught me to shift my weight in the most mesmerizing way. It was to the tune of Glenn Miller on the gramophone; my father stood in the doorway and called me a looker. I didn’t know then what he meant, but I do now. I do now.

When my mother said ‘sway,’ she always meant it doubly so. When my mother taught me how to sway, she taught me how to speak the language of persuasion. Every night I practiced in my room, my girlfriends reading magazines on the bed and laughing.

We learned to sway in the back room of the music hall. When we said ‘sway,’ we meant it triply so. When we said it, we saw the other’s hips our head, in circles, dizzying. When we said it, we implied the language of persuasion but knew we didn’t even need it. When we said it, we trembled with fear and touched our soft lips together behind the magazines.

  16. She’s bobbing in the wind, like some kind of demented flag. High off her ass, is what dispatch said, but now I’m not so sure. She’s high, sure, but high on control. This is the only thing in her life that she has control over. Who am I to take it away? She doesn’t deserve to die, but she doesn’t deserve to live through the pain. Put her out of her misery. “Ma’am–”

I sometimes view authors in a way that I shouldn’t. I hear their voice in my head when I read, and then I see them in a video or an interview and I can’t help but feel like maybe I shouldn’t have allowed that to happen.

  19. Sway with me, make me sway. We have palm trees here. We have hula dancers with swaying hips. I, on the other hand, have been swaying my hips too much in Zumba. They are both so painful, sharp shooting pains below my waist and toward my spine. I think I need to sneak into a neighbor’s house, any neighbor will do, steal a bottle of oxycontin, or else cocaine, or else heroin (I’ll try anything once; oh wait, addiction is formed with one try; is heroin addiction worse than hip pain; I don’t think so). With a bottle of oxycontin in my hands, my hip pain will disappear without even taking a pill. But I’ll keep taking them for days, weeks, months, the rest of my life. Whoopee, I’ll be able to sway my hips again. And everyone thinks this is fiction. Sway with me, make me sway.
