  12. With a limp and blue cheek, the short smileless man
left the carriage, like a boxer with a bowed head
his bag still hanging from the rack

It was two stops later that I noticed it,
a faded white strap, cracked body,
word down buckles – a mirror of its owner

    Yanking it down, it smeared
a red stain on my cuff –
all four corners soaked in past fights,
    static sweat and drooled spit

Like a punter unable to resist an inside tip
I snuck a peep into its innards –
and saw a loosened grin smiling back,
a row of teeth, chattering at the bottom of the bag
    shivering for a stop.

And to be completely honest, felt if I hadn’t attacked him he would be the attacking me. So, I let them sink in further, blood beginning to pour from the wound – he wouldn’t be giving me that look again.

  22. From when we’re young we depend on our teeth to eat our food and defend us against those nasty people that try to make us do things we dont want to do. Then we’re told biting is bad and something that isnt acceptable. Then we grow older and we start biting again, but this time its affectionate, lovebites. Then its ok again. How peculiar!

  29. teeth, they are magical, you can use them to bite your friends, to eat your apple and to even just show a great smile. without them, tigers would be lame, without them sharks would be weak. I love them. you love them. we just never give them the thought that we should because things we need the most we take for granted. yep

  30. Crooked with a space between the two front ones. “You need to get braces” the dentist says over and over, but I pay no attention to him. I can smile, I can eat, I have no pain and have never had a cavity. So why do I need to fix something that isn’t broken to begin with?

Plus having two extra teeth can be pretty cool, right?

  31. Listening to the wind blow outside, I sigh heavily before regaining my thoughts. Pulling the quill out of my writing kit, I lean back into the chair, eyes closed. Breathing heavily through my teeth, I try to remember what the words I was looking for were. It’s hard not to be absorbed by the cold air against my face, and the warmth of my blankets, protecting me from the biting chill.

  32. Ugh… teeth have always been frustrating for me. Although they are incredibly useful, and we couldn’t eat most foods without them, teeth consistently lead to frustrating mouth pain and toothaches. I have soft teeth, so cavities have been an issue for me (especially since I did not brush very well as a child).

  33. Inspecting your face in the mirror, you bare your choppers.

  35. Small things, gnawing, digesting, chattering and being the only tools that leave us full and empty at the same time, helping us to say what we don’t mean. They are shown by smiles, but often in a naked way, ashamed of being used for something that isn’t true. Teeth.

  38. My teeth hurt. Not unusual, in fact it was common for somebody who never saw a dentist and rarely brushed their teeth. It was unusual in that my teeth were sore because they were being hammered out by a large man convinced I owed him a sum of money. A large man I had never seen, taking teeth that I would never see again. Ouch.

    R J Galloway
  39. His white teeth, not perfectly aligned, the front bottom a little crooked. The way he draws them, contact with skin, burns and causes me to whimper. The way the nibble at my nose as if he is taste a gourmet meal melts me. The way our teeth clank when we gnaw at each other in laughter. But, what I love most is the smile his teeth make, when I light up his world.

  40. are for cleaning and eating and gnashing. they are little white squares of evil and love. the best thing about teeth is their points, which glimmer in the right lighting, and anyone with teeth can be a movie star because of them.
