  4. Braided. My word is braided. Like the cords of life are braided around. Like hair is braided into fancy ropes. I learned to braid early on. I don’t remember being taught, I feel like I’ve always known how to do it. Meaning I probably learned early. Mom braided my hair every day when I was younger.

  11. Her secret admirer gazed at her from afar. Would she ever know how much she was loved and longed after? Would anyone ever tell her she was the most beautiful creature to ever walk the earth? Would she ever know how angelic she looked as the sunset shone on her braided hair with flowers entwined in it. These are the things her secret admirer himself would never be able to tell her.

  17. Her hair was braided in two plaits
Either side of her pretty little head
The gap in her teeth and the blueness of her eyes
Shone bright from the centre of her soul
Her innocence could be seen on every corner street of the city she walked

  18. The only thing he really remembered clearly was how the stars hung low in the sky that night, twinkling and hazy and just as unreachable as her heart. Maybe orange moonlight braided itself into her mess of hair, curling from the late summer humidity. Maybe cicadas stilled in the magnolia trees, seemingly holding their breath as they waited for her reply. Maybe a thin brown mantis struck at a wayward moth, attracted to the false moon of the streetlamp.

He can make himself believe that any one of these things happened that night—but he can’t delude himself when it comes to the memory that matters most.

She sat silently in the circle, surrounded by others who also weaved thread with steady hands and calm eyes. They braided dream catchers in the morning light while others were still dancing from the night before.

He gave her make-up tips in exchange for trips to the ballpark, where they’d watch the home team fail and fail again to achieve a win. She wanted to be feminine; he wanted to be masculine. They figured that they should help each other, even though it wasn’t really beneficial to either of their real identities.

Now I think of Kate, as opposite from barbie as any girl could be, she smells like this real earth and wilting roses and cottonwood buds- she looks at me, tells me to message her when my hair gets long enough , and I can join the Mega Bundle- 5 girls/girls/nanofems with hair long enough to braid together.
