but don’t know what it’s like to
    float above all the troddenness
    the rotteness of the earth.

    and bring us back down

  7. Everywhere. They’re everywhere. Coming up the road, down the road. You know, I don’t even hear the cars any more. It’s all tap tap tap stop shuffle to face the bus sign. Hell, I can even hear the birds. Pigeons and jackdaws and that cat over there oh I don’t know. Stop, why can’t it stop? Why can’t they go away? it’s loud, it’s too loud, there’re people over the place and why don’t they stop?
Then a bell rings and it all goes quiet, and the street seems to quiver in the ringing as a hundred feet stop and turn to face the noise.
Fuck fuck fuck and I made this happen.

  9. A distant hope for some comfort –
even just the sound of your footsteps
climbing up the stairs of the front porch.
You’d tell me how the day went
and how good it feels to be home
    as if you never left.

  10. I walk slowly,
I kiss the earth with each footstep.
The Miracle is all around us and it is my lover
All grounds are sacred when I’m deeply present.
Every sight is sacred when I see with the eyes of my eyes.
A crackhouse with broken windows and a sunken roof
Is as precious and glows with as much of the divine as the Taj Mahal
The a dying city in the rust belt of Ohio on a dark winter day
Is a beautiful as the royal gardens of Paris in full bloom at sunset in early summer.

    He’s a good little brother –
shovels it all in his mouth when
he doesn’t know I am near

    My eyes lovingly following
    his footsteps in his
    guilty mad dash.

  14. I wipe the sweat from my eyes. IT drips from under my helmet. the quarterback calls the play, a short pass to the wide-out, also known as me. the ball is snapped, bodies slam together, one side trying to get the QB the other trying to protect him. I take off, running past the guy trying to cover me, the ball hits my diamond and I pull it down. I keep running praying my guys keep their blocks up. All of a sudden i hear them. Footsteps. Close to me. Pounding, rhythmic, getting closer. I push myself harder, the footsteps get louder, closer. the endzone is close but they are closer.I wait for the shock of the hit but push harder. As I get to the endzone and look around, there was no one nearby. The footsteps were my own.
