Not a garden, but a mid level tenement in a tall building with a fire escape, one where she could sit and smoke cigarettes all day in the heat, look down and judge people. Somewhere in the inner city where her neighbors would refer to her as “That one white woman,” where the noise was as ceaseless as religion. Instead, much to her own surprise, she found herself in a small house. One story, one bedroom, a small living room and a front porch looking at a dirt road that led to nowhere but that flat tabletop of sky, where nothing else existed for miles around, no one to judge but herself, nowhere to drop cigarettes several stories down so that she might forget her bad habits. Here, they piled up around her, a crumpled mountain of regret, a reminder that the wrong man got her pregnant. It had been her husband’s all along, her son’s color testament to that. The creamy white skin that belonged to her and to him, and now him, Jeremy, their son. But before the inevitability of continuity, before they had handed him to her, she had closed her eyes and prayed, prayed and prayed and prayed that when she opened them she would do so to a small bundle of caramel, a stain, a blessing, the one thing that would have ended the tyranny that was her husband’s fiery, unrelenting love.

  36. Jim sat there stewing in his own fetid sweat. Broiling from within; a tumultuous anger paid tribute to the heat that surrounded him, by exact emulation. The wrathful sun careened into him from all sides. he bent down and picked up the teddy bear, with its missing ear and dirt stained fabric, off the ground and with one fluid motion and heaved it over the fence. There was no customary bark that trailed off after the object that was now mid flight. All of that ceased as of yesterday, when an abrupt and unexpected screech followed by a distinct thud had leveled asunder that god damn beloved beast. Jim figured if the drunken bastard next door was apparently okay with knocking off his pet, well, he might as well have the decency to discard of his prized chew toy.
