Sometimes, it’s hard to keep pushing against the current, when all your eyes are on the paddle and the bubbles swirling as you push it in, and you no longer see the dragonflies or the waterlilies nor hear the red-winged blackbird’s call. Sometimes, you just need to give up and drift for a while.
The storm was severe and they were caught out in the middle of the lake, in an aluminum canoe. They tried to paddle swiftly back to their campsite but the wind stalled their progress. Lightning flashed all around them, and they both screamed. They screamed louder when they lost their paddles.

I was paddling across the Florida Keys when I saw an alligator prowling through the swamp with a python in its jaws. The air was damp and the sun was pressing down like a scalded palm.

As I paddle forward, I begin to think about the time when my Dad and I were on this river a long time ago. He was an avid fisherman, and wanted to share that passion with me. I never got into it, but I loved being on the lakes and rivers with him. It’s weird, now, to be doing this alone. I remember falling over in the canoe the first time we did this.
