the lighting in the room stung me. Everything about the room stung me. Knowing why I was there stung me most of all. But what could I do? What could I say? Nothing, and even if there was something...I didn't care anymore, I was too tired.
The lighting was severe upon the headmistress's face. She was already harsh looking, and this angled her like a raven, it was foreboding. Tommy felt the dignity and courage he had walking up shrivel up inside of him and fall with a clatter to the bottom of his stomach.
